Description/History:
At 2 meters, Zane Firethorn is tall, even for an elf. He weighs a little more than the average elf, but, all in all he very closely resembles a tall human with pointed ears. He has pale green eyes and black chin-length hair (quite an unusual combination!) that currently has dark green streaks. He looks rather average in terms of body build, but is slightly stronger than one would guess.

He was born in a small town near Halifax, Nova Scotia in the UCAS to R'thorio and Tracia Firethorn, both of whom had goblinized during their adolescence. He, however was born an elf. He was always interested in electronics and computers, and, while very bright, he never did well in school, always finding more interesting things to do in his spare time or during class. He was particularly interested in languages, however no classroom setting ever seemed to satisfy him.

During his youth, he often played with his "sister," R'thoria Deadwood, who was actually the child of his father's partner. His father was R'thoria's godfather, and Amadeus Deadwood, R'thoria's father, was his godfather. He was slightly jealous of R'thoria because she was human and because she excelled at school. Unfortunately, at age nine, while floundering in fourth grade, his father and Amadeus were killed in a "car accident" (at least, that's what they were told). Grief-stricken, his mother decided that it would bo best to get out of the country and go live in Tir Tairngire, where they could be "with their own kind." Zane was devastated at the thought of leaving his friends, but he didn't have much say in the matter.

In Tir Tairngire, things began to go a little more smoothly. Fascinated by the language he was suddenly immersed in, he quickly picked up Sperethiel. Things began to turn around in school, as well. He became more interested in computers and electronics (if that's possible), and the school's mode of teaching suited him perfectlly. He also picked up Spanish, Japanese, French and bits of German, both from courses at school and through the Matrix. He spent nearly all of his time using the tortoises at the school, and at home he began fixing and building electronics, which he sold to a local electronics store. When he had saved up enough for a datajack, he had one implanted behind his ear. This was a mistake on the part of the implant doctor, who thought he would be using it for vehicle rigging. When Zane had saved up enough money a second time, he went to a different clinic and got the second datajack installed correctly in his temple.

Also while he was at school in Tir Tairngire, he was required to take several self-defense classes that were thought to improve the life expectancy of the graduated students. He particularly enjoyed unarmed combat and staff weapons, though his mother never let him buy one for himself. One part of the class involved sneaking away from an area where there was likely to be trouble. Another involved attempts to disarm someone with a gun. This, in conjunction with the trid movies and what he learned during his time in the Matrix, gave him a general idea of how to shoot a gun. He actually got to shoot one, once, when a friend's father took them to the shooting range. His wrist hurt for weeks.

He had never been a particularly popular child in Halifax, partly due to his intelligence, partly due to his ears, however, in Tir Tairngire he began to be accepted and even admired by some of his peers. His care and skill with electronics allowed him to continue to earn money from the electronics store and from his classmates, who often asked for special orders ranging from private radio transceivers to average hand-held computers, generally clones of a cheap model if he could get his hands on it. He also would show the other students how to read schematics and would teach other begining deckers the basics of programming.

But things weren't going all that well for Zane socially. He had a couple of girlfriends his freshman year but they didn't really interest him. For one, none of them could talk with him at his level. He longed for someone he could discuss electronics with. The other major factor in his disinterest, he figured out during his sophomore year, was that he just plain wasn't attracted to girls. When he came out at school, the majority of the people didn't seem to care, however a few tended to avoid him whenever possible. He was, in fact, quite relieved, after hearing of human kids in the UCAS and other places around the world who were brutally beaten or worse. However, the pickings were just as slim in the boys as the girls.

He graduated from high school in the top ten percent of his class at age sixteen, still trying to decide where he could go with his electronics skills. He decided that he would head back into the UCAS into the layer of people who were so diverse and so talented that they could pull anything off. His mother strictly forbade him to go, citing the normal excuses that it was dangerous, he could get killed and then what would she do and so forth. This only deterred him for a year, when his mother died unexpectedly of a severe heart attack. The doctors cited no specific reason for the attack, just that she had had a weak heart. He was tested for the same, but the tests came back negative. All in all, he was extremely healthy. The Tir Tairngire government decided that this healthy boy be put into a foster home for the remainder of the year until he turned eighteen. The first few days were a living hell, as the familly owned five cats. His request for transfer didn't go through nearly quickly enough for him, and he fled on a bus to Seattle after the sixth day. He decided it was better, after all, because he had wanted to go to Seattle anyway. All he managed to take with him was a couple of his favorite punk rock OCs, one of the Pocket Secretaries he had made and his Allegiance Sigma. (He realized later that he completely forgot his OC player)

At the end of his first day in Seattle, he was cold, wet, alone, disheartened and hungry. Soon after, he talked the owner of an electronics store into letting him fix some of the equipment that was brought in. He met a fixer who occasionally provided him with "equipment," which was more often than not junk, that he was able to repair or build into something useful he could sell to the owner of the electronics store. Using this system he was able, in his first month, to eek out enough to rent a basement room for a couple months.

During this time he was on the lookout for someone at his level. Several times he went on dates with much older men, but they never seemed to be enough. When he finally earned enough to have a little extra to spend, he decided to get his hair streaked green, and was very pleased with the result.
